Yes, sometimes footballers go down easily or even dive to gain an advantage. Yes, it’s bad, and yes, it’d be nice if it didn’t exist. But there are so many issues in the game which cause it to pale in comparison. FIFA’s alleged corruption; the slave workers dying while building World Cup stadiums in Qatar; the dearth of black managers or Asian players in the Premier League; the money that agents are sucking out of the game; the counter-productive way we teach our youngsters to play – these are all fascinating, contentious, important debates to have. Whether or not Arjen Robben is living up to your stereotypical standards for M-E-N is relatively inconsequential.
